Subject:  Chinese Consulate Phone Scam

ITS is aware UCR faculty and staff are receiving telephone calls in English and Chinese purporting to be from the Chinese consulate.  The message suggests a critical parcel is available at the consulate that can affect a person’s ability to remain in the United States, but the goal is to scam people out of their banking information. The calls are part of a widespread phone scam initiated earlier this year in the United States, Australia, and the UK.
 
If you receive such a call hang up the phone or delete any voicemail left by the caller.  However, in the event you have spoken with and provided banking information to a caller, contact your bank and law enforcement immediately.

Subject:  Scams Related to Tragic Events

As hurricane Florence causes catastrophic destruction in the Carolinas, there are criminals who use tragic events to scam money from people trying to help the victims of natural disasters.  Here are some tips to avoid scams after disasters.

  1. Be skeptical of emails or social media posts asking for donations - It is far too easy for bad actors to pose as legitimate charities. If it appears legitimate go directly to the webpage for the organization instead of clicking a link in an email or social media post. 
  2. Ensure the charity is trustworthy - Research the charity first by visiting the Better Business Bureau online or by searching for the National Association of State Charity Officials to ensure the charity is registered to operate in California.
  3. Use the proper form of payment - When possible always pay with a credit card but never cash or gift cards.  Using a credit card can shield you from fraud and possibly deny the funds to the fraudsters.  If you pay by check, ensure it is made payable directly to the charity and not a third-party.  
  4. Never bow to pressure - If you feel as though you are being pressured or bullied into giving then it is likely a scam.  Credible organizations will never pressure or guilt a person into donating to disaster relief. 
  5. Report charity scams - In the event you believe you have been defrauded by a charity, do not hesitate to report the scam by filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.  This step may help others avoid being a victim of fraud in the future.

Subject: Voice Mail Phishing Scams

Please be aware of a phishing email which appears to alert the recipient of a voicemail via a link with an expiration date. This is currently circulating throughout campus and elsewhere. The message includes a link to retrieve the voice message, but in fact, installs malicious software.

In the event you receive such an email:
1.            Delete the message:  If an email seems suspicious, it generally is. Simply delete the message without clicking on any links provided in the email. 
2.            Update Anti-virus: Always keep anti-virus software up to date to assist in avoiding infection in the event a link is clicked or an attachment is opened.
