Storage Resources
One of the biggest challenges in research today is data storage and accessibility.
The resources below are currently available to UCR faculty and researchers for their data storage and accessibility needs.
These solutions make use of high speed, secure, offsite data storage and are fully resilient which will provide the best combination of speed, scalability, supportability, and usability for our researchers.
Below you will find more information on how to access and use the existing storage solutions. Please contact us with any questions or to get started.

R'Cloud - UCR Older On-premise Storage
R'Cloud, powered by Syncplicity, offers is an entirely on-premise file storage solution that was provided to all UCR Senate Faculty in addition to, and separate from, Google Drive. This service is no longer recommended in favor of Google Drive, OneDrive, and AWS S3.
More Information:
Syncplicity Support
For support using Syncplicity, such as a specific "How To" using Syncplicity, please visit the Syncplicity Support site or email their support team at: support@syncplicity.com.
If you need further assistance in accessing your account, or for more information on data types, data security, data storage locations, please contact the ITS Helpdesk at (951) 827 – 3555 or via email at helpdesk@ucr.edu.
All R'Cloud users must adhere to the Electronic Communications Policy.

HPCC
- The recommended resource on campus for most computational research workflows.
- It can accommodate up to and including P3 data security controls.
- Up to and including P3 data can be used here.
- Rates found on the HPCC Website.
- It can be mounted and used on Linux.
- Accessible both inside and outside of HPCC.
- Inside HPCC access is very high speed via Infiniband/GPFS and very suitable for computational I/O.
- Outside access via SSH or SFTP is not suitable for computational I/O.
UC System Secure Storage and Compute
- A catalog of secure data and compute resources at the different UC Universities
- RITC - Secure Storage/Compute catalog
Cloud
- There are many choices here.
- Cloud can accommodate up to and including P4 data as long as all security controls are in place.
- Can be mounted and used on Linux and Windows machines
- Can also be accessed a number of other ways, some of which (AWS namely) can provide a range of additional compute options. Including on-demand HPC clusters.
- Access speed can be an issue for Linux and Windows mounts for Google Drive and MS OneDrive may not be appropriate for computational I/O. AWS S3 performs well outside of AWS datacenters and very fast within AWS itself.
- UC has multiple agreements with AWS, Azure, and Google to lower costs.
- UC AWS Enterprise Agreement (EA) and HIPAA Business Associate Agreement (BAA)
- UC Cloud Contract and Guidance
- UCR Cloud Services Protection Level Handout
- CloudBank is another resource to lower cloud costs for researchers.
- We can work with you to develop a solution.
- A very large set of capabilities and computational resources available.
Sherlock
- Sherlock Cloud is a secure, multi-tenant, managed Cloud platform that meets the FISMA, HIPAA & NIST CUI requirements.
- This resource is a paid service.
- Run by San Diego Super Computer Center.
Department VM/File Share
- Up to and including P4 data can be used here if the VM and file share also meets P4 security controls
- It would have some cost.
- These can be mounted and used on Linux and Windows machines.
- Moderate access speeds may not be appropriate for computational I/O.
Workstation/Server
- It can accommodate up to and including P4 data as long as all security controls are in place.
- It can be a physical workstation/server or virtual machine as all security controls are in place.
- Workstations can access secure cloud storage.
- Workstations can also be provisioned in the cloud.
- It can be Windows or Linux.
- Up to and including P4 data can be used here if the workstation also meets P4 security controls.
- The attached workstation storage would have very fast I/O suitable for computation conducted on the workstation.
- The workstation can be a physical workstation or VM.
- Access to data from outside the workstation will be slow and not suitable for remote computational I/O.
- Remote GUI access is available via RDP, VNX or X11 Forwarding.
