Information Technology Solutions (ITS) has been hard at work upgrading the campus virtual private network (VPN) from the old Palo Alto (GlobalProtect) to the new Cisco Secure (AnyConnect). For those who manage their own devices, the new VPN is now available for download from vpn.ucr.edu (see guidance). Those who use devices managed by university IT can expect to see the new client appear on their device within the next few weeks.
As a result of this transition, Highlanders who use VPN with devices that have Linux, Chrome, Android, or iOS operating systems (i.e., Linux machines, Chromebooks, phones, or tablets) will be required to use the new VPN as of Monday, October 27, 2025. If this applies to you, please find guidance below:
Highlanders who manage their own Windows or Mac device are welcome to download the new Cisco Secure (AnyConnect) VPN (see guidance).
Highlanders who use university-managed devices (including departments that are part of Secured Device Services) will see the new Cisco Secure (AnyConnect) VPN on their device over the course of the next few weeks. Once you see the client on your device, you can find guidance on how to use it in the ITS Knowledge Base.
The old Palo Alto VPN will continue to work on Windows and Mac devices until it is sunset by ITS. This date and process will be shared with campus in a future communication, so please keep an eye out for information.
If you experience any issues with VPN or network connectivity, please submit a ticket or call BearHelp at (951) 827-4848 Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. For in-person support, please visit the IT Support Services stations located at the first floors of the Rivera and Orbach libraries and the Student Success Center between Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
