August 4 Windows 11 Upgrade for SDS Users: What to Expect

UCR secured device service (SDS) users who are still on Windows 10 will have their devices automatically upgraded to Windows 11 on August 4, 2026. This upgrade is crucial as Microsoft no longer offers support for Windows 10, which means devices running Windows 10 after this date will not receive critical security updates.

SDS users may have questions about this transition. Here's what to expect:

Important Pre-Upgrade Steps

  1. Backup Your Data: This is the most critical step! While the upgrade process is designed to keep your files, it's always best practice to back up all your important files and data before any major operating system upgrade. Directions on how to back up your data can be found here:
  1. Ensure Your Device is Powered On and Connected: Your update is scheduled for August 4 at 8:00 pm. On the scheduled day for your device's upgrade, please leave it powered on and connected to the internet (either at your office or at home).

What to Expect During the Upgrade

Timing

The upgrade process will typically kick off around 8:00 pm. The download and installation will take approximately 2 to 3 hours, followed by a reboot that can take 30 to 90 minutes. During the download and installation, your device may restart multiple times.

  • Note: For most users, the upgrade will happen overnight. You should be able to login for work the next day with your device running Windows 11.

Possible Issues

Our goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible for everyone. For most end users, the upgrade is a non-event, however, it is possible for a user to experience one of the following issues:

  • "Bricking": In rare cases, a device might "brick" during the upgrade. This means the device will be temporarily unusable. Rest assured, ITS will have loaner devices on hand to assist users in such situations. If you experience and issue, please contact BearHelp right away to allow our technicians to assist. You can reach BearHelp at 951-827-4848 or its.ucr.edu/help
  • Peripheral Connections: Older scanners and printers might experience driver issues after the upgrade. BearHelp can assist with this as well.
  • Application Authentication: You may need to re-sign into some applications after the upgrade.
  • Storage Issues: Older devices might have issues with storage during the upgrade. If you encounter any problems, please contact BearHelp.

After the Upgrade (Welcome to Windows 11!)

You'll notice a refreshed look, including a centered taskbar and different settings menus. Check your specialty software to ensure it's functioning correctly. If you have any questions or encounter issues after the upgrade, please contact ITS BearHelp at 951-827-4848 or submit a ticket at its.ucr.edu/help.

Why the Upgrade?

  • Enhanced Security: Windows 11 offers a more robust security framework, built with today's cyber threats in mind. This includes a requirement for a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) 2.0 chip for improved security.
  • Improved Performance: Experience a smoother and more efficient operating system.
  • Modern User Experience: Enjoy a refreshed interface with a centered taskbar and updated settings, largely visual changes designed for better productivity.
  • Long-Term Support: Stay compliant with University of California security mandates and ensure your device continues to receive necessary updates.
