Weekly Patching for Secured Device Services

To strengthen UCR's security posture, ITS Secured Device Services (SDS) is transitioning managed endpoint patching from a monthly to a weekly cycle, effective September 14, 2026.

What SDS Users Will Experience

Within the first month of the change, you may notice more frequent restart prompts on your device as we work through the backlog of pending updates. This is expected and temporary.

Why We're Making This Change

Moving to a weekly cadence allows us to close security gaps faster and keep pace with the volume of vulnerabilities we're tracking across campus. Once the initial transition period is complete, you should see fewer disruptions overall, as smaller, more frequent updates reduce the need for larger, more disruptive patching sessions down the line.

How to Ensure Seamless Patching

Please save your work regularly and restart your device when prompted, as this allows updates to complete properly.  Also, we recommend leaving your device on overnight if possible since the patches are pushed after standard work hours and allow a few minutes for your devices to restart in the morning. If you have questions or run into issues, please contact BearHelp by submitting a service ticket.

Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our campus community’s information and systems secure.
