ITS proudly recognizes Network Administrator Michael Harris as the March 2026 Employee of the Month. Michael was nominated by Robert Lee for his exceptional dedication, technical versatility, and contributions across multiple key ITS initiatives.
Whether leading field operations, navigating complex configurations, or managing daily support tickets, Michael consistently delivers high-quality results. Beyond his technical skills, it is his unwavering "can-do" attitude and positive demeanor that truly set him apart. He approaches every challenge with a smile, making him not just a vital asset to ITS, but a true joy to work alongside.
Michael exemplifies teamwork by masterfully balancing leadership with hands-on support. As the lead for the Campus WiFi Assessment Initiative, he demonstrated his ability to coordinate a team effectively while keeping everyone motivated.
When tackling technical challenges for this project, such as wireless controller upgrades and network configurations, Michael maintains a solution-oriented mindset that prioritizes the team's collective success over individual credit. Network Operations Manager Robert Lee shared in his nomination:
“[Michael’s] friendly demeanor breaks down barriers, making it easy for both junior and senior team members to collaborate with him effectively.”
Michael’s focus on customer success is defined by his unwavering willingness to help. IT requests, whether they involve firewall adjustments or frustrating connectivity issues, can often be a source of stress for campus users. Michael counters this frustration with his signature positive demeanor and solution-oriented approach.
He doesn't just close support tickets; he solves the underlying problems with a smile, ensuring that ITS’ stakeholders feel genuinely heard, respected, and supported throughout the process.
Michael drives effective results through a combination of technical precision and relentless momentum.
As the lead for the Campus WiFi Assessment Initiative, he doesn’t just participate in the walkthroughs. He also ensures the data collected is accurate and comprehensive, directly enabling better long-term connectivity planning for the UCR community. This forward-thinking approach to "betterment" ensures high data accuracy from the start, saving the organization valuable time and resources by preventing future rework.
Michael demonstrates the same dedication in his current work on UCR’s new Undergraduate Teaching and Learning Facility (UTLF) building. He consistently uses his proactive attitude to push through technical roadblocks without delay. He rejects the status quo of "good enough," instead fostering an environment where technical improvements are welcomed rather than feared.
Robert also affirmed Michael’s positive impact in their team’s change management:
“Change is often stressful for teams, but Michael’s positive demeanor acts as a buffer against that stress.”
Whether the team is facing the massive coordination of a new project like the UTLF building, or navigating complex network changes on the university's wireless controllers, Michael approaches every transition with a smile. His steady optimism helps his team go through changes smoothly, which allows them to keep the campus network infrastructure secure, stable, and future-proof.
Congratulations, Michael, on this well-deserved recognition!
