Walk The Talk: Progress Update on the Campus WiFi Assessment Initiative

It’s been a month since Information Technology Solutions (ITS) kicked off the Campus WiFi Assessment Initiative as part of our ongoing efforts to invest in infrastructure improvements at UC Riverside.

With the launch of the Campus WiFi Assessment Initiative, we embarked on a systematic walking tour of UCR’s campus buildings and spaces to capture an accurate reading of how WiFi performs in the physical spaces where Highlanders teach, learn, and work.

Starting Strong

During the first month, ITS’ network operations and support staff, comprising eight members, spent approximately 576 man hours walking, mapping the network, holding meetings, generating network reports, and coming up with device output reviews.

Our team certainly got their steps in, as they covered 37 floors across 12 buildings, out of the over 130 spaces we have on campus. They walked each of the 12 buildings twice for good measure, ensuring that they accurately map the network traffic patterns and signal density within these campus spaces.

None of this would be possible without the partnership of UCR’s building and space coordinators, as well as our faculty and researchers, who proactively worked with ITS to ensure proper access to their respective research spaces.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, you can expect to continue seeing ITS staff in your classrooms, labs, conference rooms, and office spaces while they are in use as we carry on capturing signal readings. Once captured, this data will help us identify opportunities for network optimization, allowing for strategic improvement of campus connectivity.
