ITS Sunsets The Loan2Learn Program and Provides Alternative Resources for Highlanders

UC Riverside’s Loan2Learn program is ending in June 2026. Current users of the service will receive a notice from Information Technology Solutions (ITS) via email with instructions on how to return their loaner device. Below is a list of alternative resources for Highlanders who require access to devices or specialized software to complete their coursework.

Since 2020, the Loan2Learn program has been instrumental in providing UCR students equitable access to technology, and ITS is incredibly proud of the support it has offered to the UCR community. The program was initially established with temporary COVID-19 relief funding to address the urgent need for remote learning devices. Though it wasn’t meant to be a long-term solution, the Loan2Learn program lasted six years. However, the original funding for Loan2Learn has ended and the hardware allocated for the program has aged and will be out of warranty by June 2026. As a result, the Loan2Learn program will no longer continue beyond the Spring 2026 quarter, and all devices will be retired.

UCR is committed to ensuring that all students have access to the technology they need to succeed. The good news is, the university and the surrounding Riverside community offer other ways to bridge the digital divide.

On-Campus Resources

UCR provides several resources for short-term learning devices or specialized software needs. These services are included in the Student Technology Fee (STF) and are available to all actively enrolled students at no extra cost.

  • Laptop Kiosks: Check out a MacBook Pro, Dell Latitude, or Chromebook for up to 24 hours. Kiosks are located in The HUB, Rivera Library, and Orbach Science Library.
  • Virtual Computer Lab (VLab): Use the campus VLab service, itopia, to access specialized, high-performance software like ArcGIS or SPSS directly in your web browser using any device.
  • Physical Computer Labs: Open-access desktop workstations are available for all students in rooms 2111 and 2117 of Watkins Hall.

Purchasing and Financial Assistance

If you are looking to purchase a device or need financial help in doing so, several programs are available.

  • Apple for Education: UCR students are eligible for Apple's education pricing on MacBooks and iPads and may take advantage of "Back to School" promotions.
  • ScotSurplus: The campus surplus store often sells computers for under $200. Open sales happen on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. Visit the ScotSurplus website to learn more.
  • UCR Office of Financial Aid: Various circumstances may qualify you for emergency funds. Visit The Office of Financial Aid website for more information.
  • UCR Basic Needs Emergency Grant: If lack of technology is creating an immediate crisis for your education, contact the UCR Basic Needs Department for potential emergency grants.

Community Programs

Riverside County and non-profit organizations have programs for low-income residents and students.

  • Human-I-T: A non-profit that provides low-cost, refurbished laptops and tablets with additional discounts for those who can provide proof of low income status (e.g., Pell Grant). Visit the Human-I-T website to learn more.
  • CARES Laptop Program: Riverside County residents may be able to receive a free laptop by completing financial literacy or workforce workshops through organizations like Credit.org.

ITS is grateful for the opportunity to serve Highlanders through the Loan2Learn program. We are confident that these alternatives will continue to support our students’ success.
