ITS Expands WiFi Assessment to Cover More Campus Spaces

The work continues for the ITS Network Operations and support staff. In April, four months into the Campus WiFi Assessment Initiative, the team completed walkthroughs of more campus spaces and made minor configuration adjustments.

Following the first walkthrough of 18 campus buildings back in March (read the March progress report), the team revisited 12 buildings in April to conduct the second walkthrough. Additionally, the ITS Network Operations and support staff covered more ground—21 buildings, to be exact—for first walkthroughs.

This systematic walking tour of UCR’s campus buildings helps ITS capture an accurate reading of how WiFi performs in the physical spaces where Highlanders teach, learn, and work. Specifically, the Network Operations team maps the network traffic patterns and signal density within the campus spaces to determine what adjustments need to be made to optimize the network and ultimately improve campus connectivity.

Taking Steps to Optimize Campus Connectivity

After assessing more than 70 buildings on campus, ITS identified opportunities for optimization and performed approximately 300 minor network configuration adjustments as of April 2026.

As of this writing, the Campus WiFi Assessment Initiative is almost 60% complete. ITS will continue to provide updates in the coming months as we diligently work to improve wireless connectivity at UCR.
