In 2020, the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) announced the UC-wide implementation of the Gender Recognition and Lived Name policy, which aims to revise UC procedures and practices to make them more gender inclusive.
Implementing the GRLN policy meant providing the UCR community with the ability to update their personal information to reflect their lived name and the gender identity and pronouns that best represent them. To accomplish this, IT systems, databases, and processes had to be remediated.
UC Riverside Registrar Bracken Dailey, who is also the primary steward for the implementation of the GRLN policy within UCR Banner, detailed the prep work that ITS conducted:
"ITS team members evaluated all current systems and data sharing across campus to identify where the policy would impact current processes. This [revealed] a large list of systems and data outputs that needed to be remediated.”
The implementation of the GRLN policy was an extensive project that took over two years to complete, and it required the collaboration of key campus departments. Student Systems Associate Director Clifford Veasey explained the magnitude of the undertaking:
“To say that [the] GRLN [policy] touched all offices on campus is not an exaggeration. During the Go Live weekend, the Banner part of the team recompiled more than 30 PL/SQL packages, introduced six new functions, [and] deployed two new web pages. Over 1.2 million student records [were affected] in some way.”
The perseverance and diligence of the GRLN Implementation Team greatly contributed to the completion of the project. Bracken also commended the team for their responsiveness, patience, and collaborative spirit:
“ITS was responsive to the requests of the Registrar and other departments across campus like the Health Center. They were [also] patient [and] collaborative. On the day of the implementation, they all worked diligently to ensure [that] updates were appropriately made to all systems. From my vantage point as a functional user, this project was a total success. I can't thank them enough [as] the project was a success because of them.”
Thank you, GRLN Implementation Team, for your commitment to making UCR a more inclusive campus. ITS greatly appreciates each of your valuable contributions!
Be sure to submit your nomination for the next Team of the Quarter!
